Day 20 - Trust In the Lord

A 737 airplane weighs on average 90,000 pounds and soars across the skies at 35,000 feet at speeds unimaginable. Millions of people around the world board flights on a daily basis. We confidently board flights (ok maybe everyone is not so confident, but they board nevertheless) and trust that the plane is in proper working order and that a trained pilot is navigating the plane to their destination.

What about the highways we drive on daily. We boldly merge onto a freeway and trust that the engineers who designed these structures knew what they were doing. We trust that the freeways can sustain the weight of our car and thousands of others. We are so confident in these freeways and sky-high overpasses, that the thought doesn’t cross our mind that it will fail us.

There are also the adrenaline junkies. They jump out of airplanes with parachutes on their backs and trust that when they pull the cord at just the right moment that it will open and allow them to sail safely to land.

What about scuba divers that get air from a tank that is strapped to their back as they explore the undersea life. They simply trust that the tank will have the amount of air they need to sustain them on their journey.

But when it comes to the totality of our lives, we are hesitant to trust God completely. We may trust Him with this area or that but to trust Him with everything…that may be asking too much. Or we trust Him when all is well…all the bills are paid; there is money in the bank; friends and family are healthy, and everything is generally going well. However, when our life is upside down, our trust in God may falter and we have the tendency to take matters into our hands. The bible says “trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to Him, God is our refuge (Psalm 62:8)

Our trust in God has to be intentional and exercised on a daily basis. Even when we can’t see how a situation will work out, we have to open our mouth and speak it! “Lord I trust you”. And when things are going well and it’s a quiet uneventful day, we have to declare, “Lord I trust you”. The bible says “some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God (Psalm 20:7)

As we practice trusting the Lord and verbalizing our trust, we are empowering ourselves to trust Him more and more. Our hearts will be transformed and trusting Him will become our first response (“For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." Proverbs 23:7)

And just when you think your trust in Him is solid, life will throw you a curve ball and you will have to go back in your “faith file” and remind yourself of how good He has been in the past. Think on those things that you thought were insurmountable…but God. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8)

Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act (Psalm 37:5)
