Prayer Works

“The effectual fervent prayer of the righteous avails much” James 5:16

I’ve had the same prayer partner for 18 years. My first few days at my new job, she and I met. We worked in the same department and soon realized that we were members of the same mega church. Our friendship soon developed, and we began using our break time and lunch time to pray together. We have prayed about our jobs; family issues; marriages; etc. but mostly over the past 18 years our prayers have been intercessory prayers.

We have seen countless answered prayers in situations and in people’s lives that had no idea that we were praying for them. When we come to God, we come expecting for Him to hear us and answer our prayers. While it hasn’t always been the answer or outcome, we wanted we have no doubt that when we come to Him, he hears us and is “faithful and just” to answer our prayers. I truly believe that God has blessed our 18-year friendship and prayer partnership because we have been faithful, steadfast and fervent in our prayers. For 14 years of our 18-year friendship, we have lived in different states. But that has not deterred us and our prayer time. We have prayed over the phone for the past 14 years. We thank God for technology! Matthew 18:20 says “wherever two or more are gathered in my name there I am with them.” I strongly encourage all believers to have someone they can partner with in prayer.

The beauty of prayer is that you can pray anytime and anywhere. In fact, the bible tells us in Ephesians 6:18 to “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.” Each day is a new day for you to be used by God to pray for a situation or a person. While many of us are in the workplace (whether working remote like myself, or not) the Lord puts countless people and situations in our path that we can pray for. Ask God to show you who you can pray for at work. Or when you leave the house and are out and about…go out expecting to pray for someone or something.

Prayer is a conversation with God. He cares about the big things as well as the small things in our lives. Anything that concerns you, He wants to hear about it. His word says in 1 Peter 5:7 “Cast your cares on Him because he cares for you. Cast your cares, big and small on Him. Once you get into the habit of going to Him first with everything, you will see His mighty hand move in your life and in the lives and situations of others. It will draw you closer to Him and it will strengthen your faith and give you something to look back on when life gets uncertain.

Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
