Day 19 - Temptation, Getting Ahead of God

Writer's picture: Rev. Angela JacksonRev. Angela Jackson

When we run ahead, we end up worshiping other things and building altars to the gods of our plans. Getting ahead of God is not getting ahead, it’s an attempt to rescue ourselves.

We can go all the way back to the story of Abraham and Sarah. God had promised them a son, but as the years passed without fulfillment, they grew impatient.

Sarah suggested that Abraham take her maidservant, Hagar, as a wife to bear a child. In their attempt to fulfill God’s promise on their own terms, they caused strife and conflict within their family. When we trust in the Lord with all our hearts and acknowledge him in all our ways, He promises to make our paths straight.

When we are tempted, remember the Word is a sword. Speak to your temptations. Use the Word to kill them. Use the word of God to dismantle transgressions and doubt about completing the Daniel Fast.

When we use the Word as a sword, we find that "the fleeting pleasures of sin”, which is often food, will not compare to the joy in God, and though we do not presently see that clearly in the midst of temptation, we must act in obedience and believe God’s promises to be true.

Psalm 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

The phrase "hiding God's Word in your heart" means memorizing and meditating on the Bible. Some ways to keep the Word of God in your heart include:

• Reading it daily

• Praying before and after reading

• Reading out loud

• Keeping a journal

• Learning it by heart

• Posting scriptures around home or office

• Choosing a "verse of the week"

Cultivate deeper fellowship with God. Submit yourself to daily scripture reading where you can see stories of faith.
