Day 8 - Why is Prayerlessness a Sin?

Scripture:

1 Samuel 12:23 captures the heart of this truth: “As for me, I will certainly not sin against the Lord by ending my prayers for you. And I will continue to teach you what is good and right.”

Samuel recognized that neglecting intercession for others was not merely an oversight but a sin against God. Prayerlessness reflects disregard for God’s command and a lack of care for others’ spiritual and physical well-being.

In 2016, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Europe for work. Though a professional assignment, those three months felt like paradise. Among the highlights was my time in Aberdeen, Scotland, known as the "Granite City." Its shimmering stone buildings and picturesque coastline were captivating. Walking through its historic streets and soaking in the Scottish landscape felt like stepping into a storybook. Each day was an adventure, blending professional achievements with the awe-inspiring culture and scenery.

Two months before my journey, my spiritual mentor (whom I consider my angel) gifted me a book titled Mighty Prevailing Prayer by Wesley L. Duewel. Along with the book was a heartfelt note expressing hope that I would be blessed by its message. Little did I know how transformative those words would be.

Chapter 4 of the book (titled Prayerlessness Is Sin), begins with the powerful statement: “There is no easier sin to commit than the sin of prayerlessness.” Duewel emphasizes that failing to pray is not merely a personal shortcoming but a sin against God and others. This truth urges us to reflect on the place of prayer in our lives.

James 4:17 reminds us: “Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.” This applies to prayer when we know its importance yet neglect it. Such disobedience weakens our spiritual lives, leaving us “comparatively powerless,” as Duewel explains (p. 29). Neglecting prayer limits God’s work in and through us.

Jesus also addressed this in Luke 12:47: “That servant who knows his master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows.” Failure to prioritize prayer is a form of disrespect to God’s Word and the love of Christ.

This teaching compels us to renew our commitment to prayer. Prayer is not merely a discipline but a lifeline to God’s power and presence. Begin today by asking God for forgiveness for moments of neglect. Commit to daily intercession as an act of love and obedience.

Reflection:

What steps can you take to guard against the sin of prayerlessness? How can you intercede for others as Samuel did?

Prayer:

Lord, forgive me for neglecting prayer. Help me to prioritize time with You and intercede faithfully for others. Strengthen me to live a life that honors You in word and deed. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
