Day 5 - Unforgiveness

Jesus gives us an example of how to pray with the Lord’s prayer in Matthew 6:9-13. And then immediately after the prayer it is followed by a discussion of forgiveness and how we are to forgive those who have sinned against us. Forgiveness is the hardest thing for us to do as humans. If someone deeply hurts us, it is difficult as humans to decide to forgive the person. Dr. Tony Evans says that forgiveness is a decision. It is not an emotion. When you forgive based on emotion, forgiveness is subject to being rescinded at some future point in time, like maybe the next day. But when you make the decision after careful thought and prayer, forgiveness is genuine and can be lasting. It doesn’t mean that we forget the sin against us, but the pain that unforgiveness brought us is no longer present or has control over us.

In verses 14 and 15 of Matthew 6, Jesus says if we forgive those who sinned against us our Father in Heaven will forgive us of our sins. But if we do not forgive, He will not forgive us of our sins. Our sins against God are more than likely bigger and occur more frequently than the one or two times someone sinned against us. We sin all the time against God with our thoughts, words, the things we do, and the places we go. God shows us grace and mercy daily. But let someone sin against us and some of us take unforgiveness of that sin to our graves. And let’s be clear, there are some things we have done to others that have caused pain and need to be forgiven, whether we forgive ourselves, and/or in time they forgive us.

Our lack of repentance and true forgiveness is the reason many of us aren’t receiving the blessings or miracles we are asking of God. In Mark 11:20-26, Jesus said if we have faith in God whatever mountains we have in our lives can be moved. But in verses 25 and 26 Jesus said forgiveness is a condition of us moving the mountains because without forgiveness God cannot give us the favor we desire.

If we want heaven on earth, forgiveness is a requirement. Forgiveness is not for the forgiven, it is for the forgiver so that the unforgiveness no longer controls our lives and keeps us from receiving what God has in store for us.

Prayer: Lord, we thank you that you are a forgiving and merciful God, and we are thankful that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. Help us Lord as we draw near to you on this fast to truly have the heart to forgive those who have trespassed against us as well as those we have trespassed against. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
