Day 3 - Abiding and Remaining

Scripture: John 15:1-5
John 15:4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me."
Reflection:
In John 15, Jesus uses the metaphor of the vine and the branches to teach us about our relationship with Him. He identifies Himself as the "true vine," and we, as believers, are the branches. This imagery beautifully illustrates the intimate connection we are called to have with Christ.
1. Understanding Our Identity:
As branches, our identity is rooted in Jesus. Just as a branch derives life from the vine, we draw our strength, purpose, and identity from Christ. This connection is not a one-time event; it is a continual, daily experience. To abide means to remain, to dwell, to stay connected. It’s an ongoing relationship that flourishes with time and intentionality.
2. The Importance of Abiding:
Jesus emphasizes that apart from Him, we can do nothing. It is easy to fall into the trap of self-reliance, thinking we can produce fruit through our efforts alone. However, true spiritual growth and fruitfulness come from our dependence on Him. When we abide in Christ, we open ourselves to His guidance, love, and power.
3. Pruning for Growth:
Jesus also speaks of the Father as the gardener who prunes the branches. This pruning process may involve challenges or trials that seem difficult at the time, but it is ultimately for our good. God desires us to bear more fruit and grow deeper in our faith. Embracing this truth can help us to view struggles through the lens of God’s loving care and purpose.
Application:
1. Daily Connection:
Make it a priority to spend time with Jesus each day while fasting. This could involve reading scripture, praying, or simply sitting in silence and allowing his presence to envelop you. Consider journaling your thoughts and prayers as a way to deepen your spiritual connection.
2. Reflect on Your Fruit:
Take time to assess the fruit in your life. Are you exhibiting the fruits of the Spirit as described in Galatians 5:22-23—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control? If you find areas lacking, ask the Lord to help you abide more deeply in him.
3. Embrace the Pruning:
When faced with challenges, instead of resisting, seek to understand what God might be teaching you through them. Ask Him to help you see His hand at work, shaping you into the person He wants you to be.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for inviting me to abide in You. Help me to remain connected to Jesus, the true vine, and to draw my strength and life from Him. Teach me to recognize Your loving hand at work in my life, even when pruning feels painful. May my life bear fruit that glorifies You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
