Day 20 - How Much Fruit Are We Bearing?

I remember 12-plus years ago when I started my first “group” fast with Larry Baty. I had almost convinced myself that I wouldn’t and couldn’t make it without so many things, as it pertained to my own personal comfort foods and drinks. I would see Larry slicing fruit by hand (those huge pineapples, apples, etc.) with a processor. I kept thinking, “That’s just too much work for a glass of juice.” I thought I could still drink regular juice off the shelves at the grocery stores with little sugar in it, but NOPE! I was wrong. He subtly reminded me of the unnatural contents, the concentrated sugar, the calories, etc. He also threw in the fact that unnatural fruity drinks raised the level of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, strokes, and more.

That was an eye-opener for me, as I currently battle high blood pressure. Sure, I’m taking medication for it, but there is nothing more comforting, healthy, tolerable, and delicious than making my own fruit juices and smoothies. Not just because we are fasting, but these natural fruit juices/smoothies have become a way of life. I made a batch of fruit smoothies last week, and I will continue feasting for nourishment. It is one of the best ways to preserve my life and to remain connected to a spiritual realm that’s much bigger than me.

So, what does this have to do with bearing much fruit?

Well, when I think of fruit, I can’t help but think of “The Fruit of The Spirit”. In Galatians 5:22-23, the word says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”

The idea of indulging the body with natural fruit also speaks to the fruit we bear in a spiritual sense to those around us. Are we spreading love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control to one another? There is always an opportunity to do so. As a living sacrifice, we do this as a way of paying homage to God, honoring him in obedience.

My prayer for each of us is that we take a fresh look at ourselves and an even fresher look at how much fruit we are bearing.
