Day 2 – Isaiah 58:6

“Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? (Isaiah 58:6)

Fasting has been practiced by many as a collective event, for a specified amount of time, and it has also been practiced by individuals for specific reasons.  In many Churches, it has become part of the annual calendar, and some individuals fast regularly. However, if our motives do not align with the Biblical reasons for fasting God will receive no glory from it and we will not experience spiritual transformation. When we fast; we must ask the Holy Spirit who dwells within the heart of Every believer to align our motives with the Biblical reasons for fasting.

The Bible tells us in Zechariah 7 of God’s response to Priests who had come to ask Zechariah if they should maintain their fast at the same time they had in the past. God’s answer was a series of questions about their motives. He asked them – when you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months during those seventy years, did you fast for Me? (Zechariah 7:5).  Fasting is not to be approached as a ritual to coerce God into answering our requests, but to ultimately honor God by the changes in us that fasting brings.  In verse 7 God expresses his desire for obedience to his word rather than rituals that lack sincerity and authenticity.

Isaiah 58 spells out for us the type of fasting that glorifies and pleases God. Fasting cannot substitute for our obedience to God’s word. Here Isaiah spells out why we should fast – to loose the bonds of wickedness, undo our heavy burdens, liberate the oppressed, and break every yoke. Sometimes those bonds, burdens, oppression, and yokes are about us as individuals, and sometimes it is the collective cry of the children of God for our community at large.

When we fast each of us must examine our hearts regarding our motives. It is certainly in line with God’s Word to pray and fast on our behalf. However, in today’s world where wickedness, burdens, oppression, and yokes abound, it is imperative that we also choose to fast on behalf of our society – domestically and internationally. Let us not forget we are all in this battle together – we are soldiers in the army of God and fasting is one of our weapons against the enemy.
