Day 1 - Welcome Holy Spirit

Writer's picture: Larry BatyLarry Baty

As we begin the Daniel Fast on this first day of the New Year, we want to prepare to receive the fullness and power of the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity (God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit).  Many people have incorrectly referred to the Holy Spirit as an it and not a person.  In John 14.26 Jesus said He would send an advocate or comforter who the Father will send in Jesus’ name that will teach us everything and remind us of all that Jesus taught.  A thing cannot teach or remind us of anything, but a person can.   Ephesians 4:30 says do not grieve the Holy Spirit.   How can a thing be grieved or affected by our sinful acts?  But a person can.   The Holy Spirit has feelings and is affected by our acts of sinfulness or our willful ignorance of the Word of God.  My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6, NKJV).

The Holy Spirit lives in each of us and we determine based on our desire to draw near to the Lord how much of the power of the Holy Spirit we get to see in our lives.  Said another way, it is our relationship with Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit that will determine how much power we will experience.  Fasting helps us to draw nearer to the Lord by allowing us to focus on Jesus, through prayer, the reading of God’s word, through service, worship, and by literally feasting on God and the things of God and not on the physical or material things of this life.   Hebrews 11:6 says without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who draws near to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. Mark 10:15 says anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.

Will you seek Him in this season of fasting?   Will you allow the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you as we ask the Holy Spirit corporately to do things that only He can do as we feast on God’s word and pray for the presence of the Lord to be among us?  Let us seek His face as we fast and pray.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we ask that you continue to abide in us and help us abide in you as we unite corporately in this first of the year fast.   Let no unbelief, doubt or fear enter our minds as we draw near to thee with the help of the Holy Spirit.  Romans 1:17 says, “the just shall live by faith”.   Let us have the faith to believe without a doubt that you are a rewarder of those who diligently seek you.   Give us childlike but not arrogant faith and let us continue to seek wisdom that is given only by you.  In Jesus’ name we pray.   Amen.
