Day 1 - Self-Examination

Writer's picture: Larry BatyLarry Baty

Scripture: Psalm 36:2

In their own eyes they flatter themselves

too much to detect or hate their sin. (NIV)

I recently participated in a small group study at TCWW (The Church Without Walls) reviewing a book called Sacred Rhythms, written by Ruth Haley Barton. There were many lessons learned along the way, but one of the more difficult subjects in the book was that of self-examination.

I believe the more that we fast and pray and make it a habit (discipline) and not just an annual event to lose weight and feel better, that self-examination is something God will introduce to us as we grow in our relationship with Him. I like to say this is where God introduces you to you. He already knows who we are. He knows everything about us, including the number of hairs on our head, or not, in my case. We are the ones that want to hide our sin and not be vulnerable with God to allow Him to do the work that He needs to for our transformation.

So, what does this have to do with Unity in Prayer through fasting? We cannot commit wholly and fully in a unified effort to call on God to act unless we have closely examined ourselves and laid bare our souls to the Lord and committed to go higher and deeper in our relationship with Him. Prayer is demanding. Fasting is even more demanding. Being committed to a group for a three-week period of time for the purpose of being united in prayer and fasting in order to get God to move on things that He alone can do is even more demanding.

On this fast, the challenge is for us all at some point once we get through the pain portion of the fast, where our hunger pains are controlling our thoughts, to examine ourselves and see through God’s eyes who we truly are.

Are you ready to see what God sees? Can you handle the truth? Is self-examination worth the effort to truly see God move the way we need Him to?

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for allowing us to experience all that we did in 2024 and help us to prepare ourselves by examining ourselves so that we can receive the fullness of the grace that you want us to receive in 2025. Let this fast be the first step in giving you the praise, honor, and glory that you deserve. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
